Amazing vehicle, only had 10,000km on the clock, everything brand new, immaculate condition and the drying room proved very useful. Top level service and great communication at all times (couldn't be more helpful). Will certainly be back for more!

You don’t pay anything extra for comprehensive insurance (excess/deductible applies), unlimited kms, diesel tax, extra drivers, credit card fees, airport transfers at start and end of hire, touring atlas, gas bottle fill, cleaning, 24-hour breakdown service, child car seats, linen, bedding, kitchen equipment including a full complement of quality utensils, crockery, wine glasses, coffee plunger, pots and pans. Absolutely not, Wilderness is about absolute transparency.  Our rates are all-inclusive which means there are no hidden costs and the only surprises are good ones. Check out how our prices compare with other companies. [back to top]

How far in advance should i book the ferry crossing between North and South Islands?
If you plan to travel between the North and South Islands, you'll need to take a ferry across Cook Strait.  We can make the ferry reservation for you.  Don't worry if you haven’t locked in a crossing date.  Tickets are fully transferable so you can book a tentative date and change it closer to the time if needed. If you are travelling in peak season (December and January), we advise booking in advance.  Be aware there may be less flexibility for changing sailing dates in summer. [back to top]

Can I leave my suitcases at your base until the end of my hire?
Yes. If you are doing a return trip (starting and finishing in the same city), you may wish to consider leaving your suitcases at our base until you return.  If you are doing a one way trip, we may be able arrange a your suitcases to be couriered to your return location. [back to top]

Can I bring my bike?
Yes.  We recommend foldable bikes that fit under the rear seat.  If you plan to bring a foldable bike, please check with our team that your bike will fit.  Our campervans don’t have bike racks and we don’t allow bikes to be stored in the living area as they cause too much damage.  The other option is to hire a bike at one of the many popular biking destinations around the country.  Check out our mountain biking page for more information.  [back to top]

Before you get here

Can you recommend a hotel to stay in at the start or conclusion of our holiday?
Absolutely.  Check out a range of accommodation options recommended by our team.  [back to top]

Should I spend a night in hotel accommodation or set off in my campervan as soon as I arrive?
If you are arriving on a long-haul flight, we strongly recommend you spend a night in a hotel to catch up on some sleep. Often people think they have had a good rest on the plane but chances are you still have tired eyes and driving isn't the best option. If you are arriving from elsewhere in New Zealand or from the land of dingoes, you should be okay to hit the roads on the same day.   [back to top]

Do you provide transfers?
Yes, we go the extra mile. We provide complementary transfers from Auckland and Christchurch airports or your airport hotel to our base at the start and end of your trip. [back to top]

When is New Zealand's busy tourist season?
The summer months (December, January and February) are predominately the busiest time of the year for tourism. As well as international visitors, many New Zealanders take their holidays from December 26th (Boxing Day) for approximately three weeks. This period is typically the peak of the season while Easter and school holidays can also be very busy. [back to top]

What will it cost me if I have an accident?
Up to NZ$5,000 if you have not purchased the Excess Waiver or $0 if you have. Click here to take the mystery out of rental vehicle insurance.  [back to top]

Are there sandflies in New Zealand?
Yes, particularly in wet areas such as Fiordland, so don't forget to pack some insect repellent. Legend has it on the West Coast of the South Island some are big enough to carry away small people! (NB: if you are under 40kg and shorter than 4ft, bring weights and insect repellent...) [back to top]

Are there any snakes, crocodiles or dangerous spiders in New Zealand?
Rest assured there are no snakes or crocodiles. We do have one poisonous spider (the Katipo) - sightings of which are about as common as that of the Yeti. The most dangerous creature you are likely to encounter is a grumpy possum. [back to top]

What the easiest way to stay in touch with friends and family back home?
You can roam or purchase a prepaid SIM card and mobile broadband from VodafoneTelecom or 2 degrees. 2 degrees products are available online or at supermarkets, gas stations, and other stores all over New Zealand. Vodafone and Telecom have branches all around the country including stores in the airports. Old-fashioned pre-paid calling cards are another option. Public access wireless (hotspots) is available at many camping grounds, cafes, malls, museums, libraries, and gas stations.   [back to top]

Can I use my mobile phone when driving?
No, it is illegal.  [back to top]

Can I drive my Wilderness motorhome in my Australian or English rugby jersey?

On the road

I'm thinking about travelling in winter.  Am I crazy?
No way.  In fact, the winter is a great time travel.  It’s much cheaper (winter rates are less than half of summer rates) and quieter and you can enjoy snow sports.  But you’ve got to be in a winterized vehicle to be comfortable.  Our Base Jumper motorhomes are designed for four seasons.  They drive like a car not a truck and have excellent traction, a superb ABS braking system and a low centre of gravity which will see you firmly grounded to the roads. The efficient diesel heater, SL grade polystyrene insulation and thermal backed curtains will keep you toasty warm day and night without having to plug into mains power. Not to mention a hot shower, and drying room. Unlike gas and electric heaters, a diesel heater can be used 24/7 and while you are driving. The unique drying room keeps the moisture out ensuring warm, dry and fresh smelling clothes day after day - we promise. For more information, check out our winter warning section.  If you’re planning to stay in campgrounds, our Dart campervans are an even less expensive option. As long as you’re plugged into mains power at night, you’ll be as snug as a bug in a doona.  [back to top]

What roads are out-of-bounds for Wilderness campervans?
We don't have a "black list" of roads that our insurance doesn't cover.  That's why we're called Wilderness Motorhomes - we want you to get into the wilderness.  You will be covered by our policy on DOC campsite access roads and other all other named roads unless you have to travel on a beach, through a river or salt water, or on a road that is in such poor condition that it damages the vehicle.  [back to top]

Can I take a Wilderness campervan to a ski area?
Absolutely! Our insurance cover doesn’t exclude you from driving on ski access roads. You can fit skis and snowboards up to 185cm long in the Base Jumper’s rear storage locker. For more information, check out our winter warning section. [back to top]

I've never driven a motohome before.  What is it like?
All our campervans drive like cars.  They are lightweight, have high performing turbo diesel engines, and all the added features of a modern European vehicle including ABS and airbags.  Because they are not built on truck bodies, they are not restricted to the 90km/hr (55mph) open road speed limit.

What is the cost of fuel?
Because all our campervans are built on high performing European vehicles, they are particularly fuel efficient using between 9 litres/100km (26mpg) and 11 litres/100km (21mpg).   They all run on diesel which is cheaper than petrol in New Zealand.   For up to date fuel prices, click here[back to top]

Are your campervans suitable for freedom camping?
All our campervans are certified self contained.  This means they have been approved for freedom camping in places where freedom camping is permitted.  A self-contained motorhome has a toilet and enough fresh water and waste water storage for three days of camping.  While freedom camping is a wonderful way to experience the backblocks of our country, care must be taken to respect the camping policies of each community and minimize the impact of your stop over on our natural resources.  To find out more about freedom camping, click here. [back to top]

How do I dump my waste?
Free dump stations are dotted all around the country at campgrounds and gas stations.  A copy of the dump station guide is included in the onboard touring atlas in all Wilderness vehicles.  We will give you a “dry run” during your vehicle familiarization tour when you pick up.  If you want some tips on how NOT to dump your waste water, watch the movie Runaway Vacation!  [back to top]

Will I be able to start my motorhome in the morning if I leave the fridge going all night?
Yes. Our motorhomes have a dual 12V battery system: one battery designated to start the engine and the other to run the fridge/freezer, water pump and lighting. When the engine is running the batteries are charged. When the engine is turned off they are isolated so no matter how long you leave the fridge running you will always be able to start the engine. [back to top]

Is it safe to drink water everywhere in New Zealand?
Tap water is safe to drink in most areas.  In isolated areas, look out for signs saying that the tap water is not suitable for drinking.  To protect yourself from Giardia, a water-born parasite that causes diarrhoea, boil, filter or chemically treat water from lakes or rivers before drinking.  If you are planning to do a lot of hiking, you should consider purchasing a water filter available from most good outdoor stores. [back to top]

Do I need to bring a plug adaptor?
New Zealand power outlets accept plugs with two flat oblique blades, with a vertical ground (or inverted V) - click here. Very few other countries use this format, so you will probably need a travel plug adapter.. [back to top]

Will I need a voltage converter?
Electricity supply voltage is 240 volts, with a frequency of 50Hz. Our Base Jumper campervans have a 600W inverter that converts electricity from 12V to 240V but if you travel to New Zealand with a device that does not accept this, you might also need to bring a voltage converter. [back to top]

Do you hire GPS systems?
Yes. We have TomTom GPS with New Zealand maps loaded available for NZ$7 per day for up to 28 days.  Just select GPS when you enter your reservation details.  If your trip is longer than 28 days, the maximum you will pay is NZ $200.  [back to top]

Can you connect to Wi-Fi at camping grounds?
A number of camping grounds and cafes have public access wireless (called hotspots). It just depends on where you are and what provider you use. Bear in mind our terrain is mountainous so, sometimes you will not be able to get signal if you are out of town. Please click here to go to a website which will show you where Telecom hotspots are located across New Zealand. If you need to get a data card for your Laptop, you can also purchase one through Telecom. Just so you know, Telecom’s main competitor is Vodafone – it pays to check both companies. [back to top]

Waving goodbye

What days am I able to pick up and drop off my motorhome?

Can I get a refund if I return my motorhome early?

If we are having loads of fun, can we extend our hire?
Definitely, however, this will depend on availability.  Just let us know and we will confirm whether we can accommodate you for the extra days.  [back to top]
