What's Special?
While being the odd one out is sometimes frowned upon, having unique features is something to be proud of in the motorhome industry!
It's not often you see a campervan parked up for days on end without being plugged in and it's not often you have to turn the temperature down while you are in the middle of the Southern Alps...
Here's why our campervan fleet stands well and above anything in its class:
Built on high performing European vehicles
There are three things we guarantee you will find on our roads - steep hills, windy corners and squashed possums. We can't do much about the possums but we can help with the other two. Unlike motorhomes built on sluggish trucks, our campers drive like cars. Both the Dart and the Base Jumper aren’t limited to 90kph or 55mph on the open road so you won’t be holding up traffic. Whether you are travelling in snow, rain or sunshine, the ABS brakes and numerous safety add-ons will keep you feeling safe around all the corners.
Designed to camp in the town or the wilderness
A self-contained campervan is designed to meet the ablutionary and sanitary needs of the occupants for a minimum of three days, without requiring any external services or discharging any waste. Fresh water for drinking and cooking is stored in tanks. Waste water is collected in waste water tanks and disposed of via dump station facilities, connected to a proper sewerage scheme. A self-contained vehicle used properly, will have no adverse effects on the environment.
Wilderness motorhomes are all certified self-contained which means you aren’t restricted to commercial campsites. Self contained campervans can freedom camping where freedom camping is permitted, use Native Parks, and are a big advantage camping at non-commercial sites such as Department of Conservation (DOC) and Regional Parks.
Made for New Zealand conditions
The internal layout of your Wilderness campervan allows you to enjoy being inside your camper if it rains (and I promise you it will). Your bones won’t rattle and your conversation won’t be drowned out when you hit a gravel road. Everything below the waist is a drawer and everything above the waist is a cupboard. Everything has a home so it’s easy to find and there’s no rattling and breakages. These campervans handle the unique terrain with ease, keep you warm and dry in rough weather, and invite you to relax in comfort after a full-on day of adventuring.
Wilderness campervans all have a dual 12V battery system: one battery to start the engine and the other to run the equipment in the rear cabin (fridge/freezer, entertainment system, water pump and lighting). The batteries are charged when the engine is running and when the camper is hooked up to mains power. When the engine is not running, the house battery is isolated so no matter how long you leave the equipment in the back cabin running you will always be able to start the engine.
Energy Efficient
The greenies are helping to make our rental campervans incredibly energy efficient. Using less energy helps to reduce the amount of greenhouse gases in the air and when burning less fossil fuels means protecting the luscious green views, we're behind it 100%. Because all the onboard appliances are light on energy, the batteries have an extended life, and solar panels top up the batteries during the day, you won't need to plug into mains power if you don't want to.
Manufactured to the highest standards
The quality of materials and workmanship from floor to ceiling in all Wilderness vehicles testifies to the Wilderness standards. The Base Jumpers are manufactured by RoadCraft and the Darts by Kea Manufacturing. Both RoadCraft and Kea source the best quality materials, fittings, and equipment in assembling the motorhomes. Using the latest high tech machinery, teams of highly skilled craftsmen construct the campers with precision and an unusually keen eye for detail.
Livery free
Because our vehicles aren’t plastered with branding, you’ll slip into the local scene easily. In fact, if you grab yourself a pair of jandals (thongs) you might even be mistaken for a Kiwi.

All linen, bedding, kitchen equipment including a full complement of quality utensils, crockery, wine glasses, picnic tumblers, coffee plungers, pots, pans and storage containers is supplied in all our motorhomes. Everything and the kitchen sink plus touring guides, and much more are included.
