One of the wonderful things about discovering New Zealand in a Wilderness motorhome is the reassurance of knowing that if something happens on the road, or you just need some advice on how to work the heater, then someone is there to help.
The Wilderness Dreamliners are a specialist team dedicated to helping Wilderness guests with any questions before they arrive or with on-road support while they’re travelling in New Zealand – and Tamara Hogg is one of them.
A former travel agent, Tamara has been with Wilderness for seven years, having started in the Reservations team. She says the company has felt like family from the day she started. “It’s the way they work – there’s a real family feel, everyone just looks after each other.”
As a Dreamliner, Tamara focuses on on-road calls and gets a real buzz out of being able to solve any issues that crop up for guests. “I do love a bit of a challenge of sorting out problems; being able to help people out and keep them happy on the road. It’s about doing what you can to make their holiday the best it can possibly be, even with any hiccups along the way.”
She says the calls can range from breakdowns to advice on how things in the motorhome work. “If there’s anything they’re unsure about they can call us. In chilly weather, people might call asking about the heating system. We can talk them through it and help work out if the problem is an empty gas bottle or they’re not connected to the right power source, or things like that.”
Because Wilderness is all about helping you see even more of New Zealand by getting off the beaten track, the Dreamliners provide peace of mind and Tamara says guest feedback makes the job incredibly rewarding. “People love that there’s someone there to help instantly, without having to wait for emails or call-backs. It’s nice that they can just ring us and get an answer straight away.”
Tamara’s top tip for Wilderness travellers
“Have a good look through our wilderness.co.nz website before you come. It’s amazing and full of all sorts of helpful tips for before you arrive. Our Adventure Preparation Kit (which you receive once you’ve booked with us) has lists of what’s in the campervan and what you need to bring, which is a lot of what we get asked. Reading up before you arrive will be really helpful.”
Tamara’s favourite motorhoming spot
“My three children love travelling in the motorhomes and the Coromandel is one of our favourite destinations – we love Cathedral Cove and Hot Water Beach. There’s a really good campground at Hot Water Beach and it’s just a short walk to the beach from there. Cathedral Cove is a simply amazing spot – there might not be a lot of freedom camping spots near it but the Top 10 Holiday Parks in the Coromandel are awesome.”
