Do I have to stay overnight at a campsite or can I camp wherever I want?

We love camping in New Zealand's backcountry — it’s why we're called Wilderness. You too can camp for a limited time in designated freedom camping areas. However, it's important to know that in order to protect New Zealand’s precious nature, freedom camping is tightly controlled.

You'll find plenty of freedom camping sites throughout the country. Download the CamperMate app to check their latest reviews — and look out for No overnight camping signs before parking up for the night.

Freedom camping is strictly prohibited in most popular tourist destinations, but you’ll often find freedom camping sites outside these locations, within 30 minutes drive.

New Zealand also has a fantastic network of conservation campsites with basic amenities and commercial holiday parks with loads of amenities.
