Fresh Water Tank Emptied Spontaneously (Frost Protection Activated)

If your freshwater tank has emptied spontaneously, it’s likely that the frost protection system has activated. When the outside temperature drops below about 4–6°C, a frost protection valve automatically opens to release the water from the system. This prevents the tank, pipes, and water heater from freezing and becoming damaged. Once the temperature rises again, the valve can be reset, and the system refilled.

  1. Warm up the motorhome interior. Turn on the living area heater and allow the interior to warm up for 30–60 minutes. The frost protection valve will only stay closed once the surrounding temperature is warm enough.

  2. Locate the frost protection valve. Depending on your model, it may be under a bed base, inside a cupboard, or in the external service locker.

    1. Compact for 2 (T135): Under the foot of bed, lift the mattress and base, look through the large oval cut out to access.

    2. Compact Plus (V337): In cupboard under the foot of the bed on passenger’s side. Lift the bottom shelf up to access.

    3. Double for 2 (T459): In base of cupboard under kitchen sink.

    4. Double for 4 (T449): In base of cupboard under forward facing dinette seat or in base of cupboard underneath foot of bed on passenger’s side.

    5. King/Twin for 4 (T447): In base of cupboard under forward facing dinette seat or in cupboard under the foot of the bed on passenger’s side.

    6. The Suite (TD744): In external service locker.

  3. Reset the valve. Press the blue button at the base of the unit. The button should stay in when the temperature is warm enough. If it pops back out, the motorhome is still too cold — continue heating for longer before trying again.

  4. Refill the fresh water tank. Once the valve stays closed, refill your tank with fresh water as normal.
