Wilderness and B Corp: Driving Purpose Beyond Profit

We’ve always believed that a great adventure should also be a responsible one. Here in Aotearoa New Zealand, that philosophy is part of our DNA. It's a deep respect for the land known as kaitiakitanga, or guardianship, and it’s a value that has guided us from day one.

We're incredibly proud to announce that as of November 2025, we’ve made that commitment official. Wilderness is now a B Corp-certified company, proudly joining a global movement of businesses that use their operations as a force for good.

For you, this certification is a clear guarantee. When you choose Wilderness, you’re choosing an adventure with a company that has been independently verified for its high standards of social and environmental performance. It’s our promise to you, and our promise to Aotearoa, made real.

What does it mean to be B Corp certified?

B Corp isn't just an eco-label. Think of it as a rigorous 360-degree health check for a business's entire operation. The non-profit B Lab independently verifies that a company meets high standards for:

  • Accountability: We're legally committed to considering how our decisions will affect our guests, team, communities and the environment.

  • Transparency: We openly share our performance and impact, so you can see how we're doing

  • Social impact: We actively work to create a positive difference for people, from our employees to the wider community

  • Environmental performance: We aim to minimise our footprint and protect the natural world, a vital element of your motorhome adventure.

As a certified B Corp, we’re part of transforming the global economy to benefit all people, communities and the planet.

Why did Wilderness become a B Corp?

We’ve always aimed to offer incredible adventures while operating responsibly. Business can and should be a force for good in the world, so for Wilderness, becoming a B Corp was a natural step in strengthening our promise to:

  • Place purpose before profits — B Corp certification helps us be accountable and consider the business’s impact on our guests, team, community and environment

  • Lead by example — inspiring other businesses in the tourism and motorhome industry to adopt more sustainable and ethical practices

  • Continually improve — The B Corp framework is a powerful tool for continuous improvement. It isn't a one-time award; it's a commitment. We are required to recertify every three years, a process that keeps the bar high and pushes us to constantly evolve our practices to see where we can do better.

  • Learn from other purpose-driven companies - Joining a global community of nearly 10,000 certified B Corps

To say I'm proud would be an understatement. This certification is a real testament to our team's incredible passion and hard work. We’ve always felt a deep sense of kaitiakitanga, or guardianship, for Aotearoa. But good intentions weren't enough. We pursued B Corp certification to hold ourselves to the highest possible standard. We wanted a framework that would challenge us to look deeper, measure our impact, and prove to ourselves and to our guests that our commitment to our land, our people, and our communities is at the core of every single thing we do.

How does a business like Wilderness become a B Corp?

To become a B Corp, a company has to prove that it's committed to doing good by showing it’s making a positive difference. The certification is rigorous. To even be considered, a business must achieve a minimum verified score of 80 points on the B Impact Assessment. The median score for ordinary businesses is just 50. Think of it like a report card that checks every part of a business to see how well it’s doing — for people and the planet.

The 5 pillars of B Corp

How we treat our team

We focus on creating a safe, supportive, and inclusive workplace. That means providing good wages and excellent benefits, like free health insurance, extended secondary caregiver leave and being a proud member of Pride Pledge.

How we protect the environment

We're passionate about the places we explore. We're actively reducing our carbon footprint by switching our support fleet to electric vehicles (EVs). We're also offsetting scope one and two emissions through Forever Forests and supporting wildlife projects like the Predator Free Hauraki Coromandel Community Trust. Plus, we follow a "repair-first" policy and include reusable items in your motorhome to cut down on waste.

How we support our community

We contribute to the local community by supporting local businesses and partnering with like-minded community organisations. This includes supporting Will & Able (who employ New Zealanders with disabilities), collaborating with Trees That Count to restore native forests, and providing support to the Monte Cecilia Housing Trust in our local neighbourhood.

How do we back up this promise?

We're proud to join this global movement, but we also know that trust is earned. The B Corp certification isn't just a badge we display on our website; it's a public promise that is backed by a rigorous process. This process holds us accountable to you, our team, and the planet in four key ways.

1. By passing the B Corp assessment

We first had to pass the rigorous B Impact Assessment, which scores our entire operation. Our verified score of 82.6 offers genuine, data-backed validation of our commitment, far exceeding the median score of 50 for ordinary businesses.

2. By making a legal commitment

We also had to change our company's legal paperwork. This means we are now legally committed to considering how our choices impact everyone—our guests, employees, community, and the environment, not just our owners. This change ensures our promise to do good endures.

3. By being transparent

We are required to be transparent by sharing our B Impact Assessment results publicly. You can view our current overall B Impact score on the B Corporation website at any time, so you can see the data for yourself.

4. By continuously improving

B Corp isn’t a 'one and done' exercise. We must recertify every three years, a process that is actually more demanding because we are required to demonstrate tangible progress, not just maintain our previous score. This requirement ensures we remain on track, keeps the bar high, and pushes us to continue improving everything we do.
