Handbrake warning light stays on after handbrake is released

The handbrake engaged warning light is an exclamation mark with a red circle. It can mean either of two things: the handbrake is not fully released, or the brake fluid is low. Driving with the handbrake on causes serious damage, and driving with low brake fluid is unsafe.

Diagnostics & Steps to Resolve:

  1. Re-engage then fully release the handbrake. Pull the handbrake lever all the way up until you feel it lock, then push the button and lower it completely to a horizontal position with no resistance. The lever should rest flat with zero tension. Even slight engagement triggers the warning light.

  2. Check if the light turns off. If the warning light goes out, the issue is resolved—the handbrake wasn't fully disengaged.

  3. If the light stays on. The brake fluid is likely low, which is a safety-critical issue. Do not drive the vehicle. Contact our Wilderness On-Road Support at +64 9 255 5300 immediately. Low brake fluid indicates urgent professional attention is required. Do not attempt to top up the brake fluid yourself.
