Lord of the Rings
North Island Campervan Itinerary

An anti-clockwise circumnavigation around the North Island starting and ending in Auckland.

Not all those who wander are lost.

When Sir Peter Jackson chose to film the Lord of the Rings trilogy in New Zealand it wasn’t a surprise. The dramatic mountains, breathtaking rivers and wide open spaces provided an ideal setting for the much-loved tale.

More than two decades later, the energy surrounding the film franchise locations, and those of its subsequent prequels, remain.

We’ve keenly researched this North Island LOTR itinerary, and organised it as an anti-clockwise circumnavigation to enjoy in less than a week — or over a few weeks. Start and end your motorhome hire in Auckland (as opposed to the land of orcs).

Our route is just a taster, but covers four areas of the North Island within three regions. Mount Doom, Mordor and Gollum’s Pool are all located within the World Heritage Site of Tongariro National Park — and are easy to drive between.

So come along young hobbit! Your own adventures through magnificent Middle-earth await. And remember, even the smallest person can change the course of the future.
