Giving you the confidence to travel

At Wilderness, we’re with you all the way. And the current COVID-19 environment is no different. Here is what we are doing to make sure that you can relax and enjoy your motorhome holiday with us.

Travel Updates

A few weeks ago New Zealand introduced a COVID-19 alert system with 4 levels so that the nation is clear on what they must do to minimise the spread of COVID-19. We are now at Level 4 and will be at Level 4 until at least late April.

The range of measures (can be applied locally or nationally) that have taken effect are:

  • People instructed to stay at home
  • Educational facilities closed
  • Businesses closed except for essential services (e.g. supermarkets, pharmacies, clinics) and lifeline utilities
  • Rationing of supplies and requisitioning of facilities
  • Travel severely limited
  • Major reprioritisation of healthcare services

Your safety and well-being are our priority and we understand this is a challenging time for everyone and we are committed to keeping you updated along the way. We are regularly in touch with other motorhome rental companies, government organisations, as well as Tourism Industry Aotearoa (TIA), which is an association that represents all sectors of New Zealand's tourism industry.

We hope that you have found a safe and secure place to stay over the lockdown period. We ask that you please stay in the same place throughout this time and not undertake any travel.

If you are coming to the end of your rental hire, please call 0508 945 337 to discuss your options with us. We understand that this can be a stressful time, but we are here for you and will help you find an option that suits your situation.

Can I stay in a motorhome during a lockdown?

Yes, think of our motorhomes as a full-service apartment. You will have your own bathroom and full kitchen to use throughout your stay. We encourage you to find a holiday park, as they have facilities that can support your stay and you will have easy access to fresh water, a dumps station and mains power. You should be prepared to stay there for up to 4 weeks, as there will be full restrictions in place for travel throughout the country.

In a holiday park you will have the support of a holiday park owner who can assist with local knowledge (ie supermarkets, pharmacies, doctors).

Can I extend my booking?

Yes, you are more than welcome to extend your booking. Please call us on 0508 945 337 or email us at Please have your booking number handy and provide the dates that you’d like to extend your booking to.

For peace of mind, during these fast changing times, we do encourage you to extend for at least 14 days, so that you have safe space until we can finalise all the current details on how to best support the Government’s recent alert level update.

We are offering generous discounts in light of the situation.

We encourage you to keep up to date through the dedicated COVID-19 website and find a safe place to stay if you have to wait out the lockdown period. We will get back you as soon as we can.

If you are considering extending your booking and staying with us during lockdown, you can find some helpful information here on where you can stay, what will be open and how we can support you during the next 4 weeks.

I’d like to drop off my motorhome, what do I do?

Remember that you should not be travelling at all during the lockdown period unless you are a foreign national.

Foreign nationals in New Zealand can now drive, take private or public land transport, or take domestic flights, in order to connect with commercial, or chartered, international flights to their home country.

There are certain criteria you must meet to be able to travel during the Level 4 lockdown period. You can find more information here.

If you are a foreign national and do need to drop off your motorhome during the lockdown period, please call our team directly to discuss what options are available. Even though our Auckland and Christchurch bases are closed, it is possible to drop off your motorhome outside our operating hours and we have a contactless drop off process option should you need to drop off over the lockdown period.  There will be no fees for dropping off after hours.

Please call us on 0508 945 337 or email us at

Please note that if you drop your motorhome off anywhere else other than our Auckland or Christchurch base without speaking with us first, we will consider this abandoning your motorhome. This means that we will be charging you for the abandonment for up to an amount of $7500.

Our call centre is operating throughout the lockdown period, so don't hesitate to reach out to us if you have any questions, as information changes daily and our team will have the most up to date information.

Please do not go to the airport if you do not have a ticket and a confirmed flight. You will not be allowed inside the airport. If you do not have a ticket, contact a travel agent or airline directly. If you are unable to secure a ticket please contact your country embassy. You can find up to date information here.

We wish you and your family nothing but health and strength during these challenging times.

Please keep safe, be smart, and be kind to everyone around you.
